The biggest thing for me about making my place feel like home was "stuff". Odds and ends, knick-knacks, tat, call it what you will but it makes the place feel lived in and, umm, warmer I guess.
Rather than go out and buy a load of random odds and ends, like vases and, err stuff, I've dotted odds and ends that I've accumulated.
Like a wig I wore (once!) to a fancy dress party. It involved lots, and by lots I mean lots of body paint which took forever to get off.
Or how about the piggy-bank that I've had for as far back as I can remember. If you look very closely at his left-hand side, there's a crack down the face. I vaguely recall dropping it on the floor because I wanted the money inside and the bung in the bottom wouldn't come out. Ahh, the joys of being young and impulsive!
Or how about the door-stop cat... it was bought for me years ago, annoyingly now I have no doors which need to be propped open - mainly due to my place being "compact", so he keeps a couple of plugs company and looks at me balefully whenever I'm vegging on the sofa instead of doing something productive.
Or some oil bottles that I spotted in Robert Dyas a few weeks ago, they looked kinda funky and once home and in-situ, actually look really nice. Certainly nicer than a couple of plastic bottles from the supermarket anyway. Oh, and the pourers make them functional as well as easy on the eye, bonus! (Yup, these aren't "stuff" I've accumulated, but they look so nice I wanted to take a picture!)
I want more lighting. The ceiling lighting is far too bright, and I suspect that it would be even with a dimmer-switch. I may have to visit Ikea.
